Beware the Grapefruit...

Reminder to those taking certain medications, particularly cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, to avoid grapefruit products. 
 
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice interact with the body to slow down metabolism of the medication, with the result that the drug stays in the body longer and has increased risk of side-effects. 
 
Those taking certain allergy, heart, blood pressure and erectile dysfunction drugs are also cautioned. 
 
In a similar matter, those taking warfarin should avoid cranberry products.


Health chiefs' grapefruit alert to drug patients

GRAPEFRUIT could be harmful to your health – if you are drinking it while taking medicine.
 
Thousands of patients taking hay fever tablets, cholesterol-reducing drugs, blood pressure, angina and Viagra pills are at risk of increased side effects if they also drink the fruit juice.
 
Health chiefs have issued warnings in a bid to alert patients to the risks.
 
Grapefruit juice and the fruit itself can effect the way many different medicines work because it slows down the speed at which it leaves the body
