Lipitor Caught Between Generic Challenger and Newer Statins

At a glance:

June 23, 2006 is the day that the cholesterol-lowering drug Zocor may go generic in the US.

Losing patent protection is bad financial news for the maker of the drug but in this case it might also be bad news for Zocor's competitors, as doctors might be inclined to switch patients from Lipitor (for example) to cheaper generic versions of Zocor.

Pfizer, the company that makes Lipitor, claims that studies show it is the better drug as it has been shown to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke as well as lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

There are also threats to Lipitor from newer, possibly better drugs such as Crestor and Vytorin. As always doctors and patients will have to weigh risks and benefits, including financial ones.

What's unclear is the destiny of Pfizer's Lipitor, the world's best-selling drug, which controls nearly 55 percent of the $16 billion U.S. cholesterol market
