FDA Elevates Scrutiny on Ties Between ADHD Drugs, Psychicatric Side Effects and Heart Attacks

The FDA is increasing its scrutiny of ADHD drugs with a recent rise in negative reports of negative psychiatric side effects and heart attacks in children. At the top of the FDA's drug list is the medication Adderall which although pulled temporarily from the Canadian market because of increased risk of heart attack in children is still widely prescribed in the U.S. Other drugs under discussion include Ritalin, Strattera and Concerta. The FDA recommended in February that a black box label be incorporated in all ADHD drug labels to ensure proper warning to parents and children.

In February, an FDA advisory committee recommended that all ADHD drugs carry a "black box," the most serious type of warning, regarding heart attack risks.
 
On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration's pediatric advisory committee will discuss "adverse reactions," including risks of psychiatric problems and heart attacks, to various drugs prescribed for children for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
