FDA Committees Examined for Conflict of Interest

This article examines a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association which examined the incidence and impact of conflict of interest occurrences on FDA committees.
 
The agency issued new guidlines for disclosure in 2002 and these do seem to be followed; however the rate of recusal from voting decisions is low and there remains the possibility that conflict may affect decisions, particularly in "non-drug" meetings whose guidelines are looser.
 
For example, more of the COX-2 inhibitor drugs might have been removed from the market if votes with those having financial interest in the drug companies were excluded.

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Members of Food and Drug Administration advisory committees often have conflicts of interest -- such as contracts or grants of more than $100,000 -- with the companies that produce the drugs under evaluation, according to a study released Tuesday.
 
'Conflicts are common, conflicts are large, conflicts rarely lead to recusal and conflicts have a small but important association with voting behavior,' Peter Lurie, the study`s lead author and deputy director of Public Citizen`s Health Research Group, told United Press International.
