NSAID Painkillers May Lead to Heart Failure

A European study suggests that for seniors who need pain management, even taking over-the-counter drugs such as ibuprofen can raise their risk of heart failure. 
 
The study followed risk factors for hospital admission in patients over the age of 60. Aside from the usual culprits (smoking, obesity etc.) the use of NSAID medications was associated with a slightly higher risk of being hospitalized for heart failure. 
 
NSAIDs mentioned in the study were ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, indomethacin and meloxicam. 
 
While the risk seen was small, the fear is that as the population ages, the effect on medical resources and general health could be important.

New research has revealed that commonly used over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen, are linked with a 30% increased risk of first hospital admission for heart failure.
 
The researchers say that though that risk may at first glance appear quite small, it has implications in particular for the elderly who are at greater risk of heart failure
