Osteoporosis Medication Makers Battle in Court

A lawsuit is under way in New York requesting that Hoffman-LaRoche alter some of its claims regarding its osteoporosis drug Boniva. 
 
Proctor & Gamble, maker of rival drug Actonel, says that Boniva only reduces risk of spinal fracture while its drug and Merck's Fosamax affect other common fracture sites. 
 
Hoffman-LaRoche insists its claims are accurate and that the other companies are just trying to regain market share with their claims.

NEW YORK -- Two giant drug companies are waging a battle in Manhattan federal court over the market for drugs aimed at protecting the brittle bones of older women -- a multibillion-dollar business expected to rapidly expand in the coming years.
 
Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals Inc. has asked a judge to force Hoffman-LaRoche Inc. to withdraw some of its advertising and stop making some of its claims about its new osteoporosis drug, Boniva
