Minnesota Bill May Force Clinical Drug Trial Disclosure to Protect Public

A Minnesota law could force pharmaceutical companies to disclose all of the information relating to their clinical trials, good and bad, to the public. Currently, drug makers must submit three seperate clinical trials to the FDA before they can get approval for distribution, but some rare side effects are not identified until after widespread distribution.
This bill comes after a number of pharmaceutical companies have been accused of hiding bad drug side effects from consumers and the FDA. Merck is facing about 10,000 lawsuits about its drug Vioxx while Pfizer is under scrutiny for hiding some side effects of its popular medication, Zoloft.

In recent months, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has required greater warnings of suicide risks for people taking antidepressants, but Witczak said the maker of Zoloft has known of this risk since the 1980s. Her lawsuit against the drug company, Pfizer, has unearthed documents proving this early knowledge, she said.
