Depression and ADHD Drugs Banned for Use in Children Still Being Prescribed

Because of a break down in the mental health services across the UK, general practitioners are prescribing SSRI inhibitors, like Paxil, to adolescents and youngsters even though the practice has been banned because of suicidal and other emotional drug side effects. Although Prozac is the only medication that has been deemed safe for children, drugs like Seroxat, also known as Paxil, are still being given to children because of a major backlog in the availability of phychiatrists and psychologists.

Banned antidepressants are being handed out to thousands of children by doctors because they face waits of up to 10 months to see a psychiatrist.
 
The antidepressant Seroxat and similar drugs, called SSRIs, were restricted for children's use by the Government's medicines' watchdog in 2003 after an investigation revealed that they could cause mood swings and increase the risk of suicide in under-18s.
 
Only one drug, Prozac, was deemed by the Medicines and Health care Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) to be safe to give to children, but only a
