Adderall, Ritalin Tend to Suppress Growth

At a glance:

A new review of past studies has concluded that children on ADHD drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin have a risk of growth suppression.

The difference in height averages three-quarters of an inch, and weight, two pounds.

It isn't established whether this suppression is lasting, or reversible.

The growth suppression may be due to loss of appetite, one of the side effects of the medication; the researchers think that adjusting dosage, and dosage timing, might be one way to counteract appetite suppression for children on these medications.

Aw with most medications it is important for parents and doctors to weigh the risks and rewards of therapy and to consider a short-term drug trial to assess the effects.
