Obesity Rate Soars in US Children

A study has confirmed that the obesity rate in US children is sharply increasing.
 
In five years, the percentage of overweighty boys has increased by over 20% and that of girls by 18%.
 
Obesity is associated with high blood pressure, heart problems, type II diabetes and even cancer, some of which, particularly type II diabetes, are occurring much more frequently in children than previously observed.

Despite years of warnings — and obvious signs — about the swelling girth of the nation's children, America has failed to address the burgeoning health problem, local researchers said Tuesday.
 
"Nothing seems to be happening, and that's what is particularly scary," said John Foreyt, a scientist at Baylor College of Medicine. "If you saw any other disease in a third of all children, you'd think there would be an enormous alarm."
