Major Hurricanes Caused Spike in Heart Disease

Doctors in Houston, Texas, who treated many patients who were hurricane evacuees last year, report a high incidence of heart problems and that heart attacks suffered were especially severe, immediately following the disaster. 
 
Several factors contributed to this, they believe, including failure to bring along, or take, medication, and extreme stress, especially among those caring for other ill family members and those who lost homes and property. 
 
Doctors recommend that bringing medication in a waterproof bag be an evacutation priority, stretching legs often to prevent blood clots on long trips, and if symptoms develop, chewing an aspirin tablet.


Last year's hurricane season yielded unexpected health problems

(6/01/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - On this first day of hurricane season, Houston doctors are reporting an unexpected finding. The double hurricanes last year triggered some very severe heart attacks.
 
"We noticed an increase by 40% to 50% in the severity of acute coronary symptoms after both Katrina and Rita," said Dr. Cezar Iliescu with UT Houst
