Diesel Fumes May Cause Cancer, Other Diseases, in Miners

Despite mounting evidence that diesel exhaust fumes increase the risk of cancer and other diseases, the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has delayed implementation of a plan to reduce underground diesel emissions in mines.
 
The mining industry has requested a delay on the grounds that scientific studies are not complete, and on the grounds of cost concerns; the miners' union, United Steelworkers, is pressing for prompt implementation.

Some years ago, salt miner Curtis Layman went to the doctor for a checkup prior to a hernia operation. The exam revealed that Layman's lungs were in terrible shape, prompting the doctor to deliver a stern warning: Quit smoking.
