Understanding the possible complications of body piercings
Humans have been piercing their bodies, for both aesthetic and practical reasons, since time immemorial. In ancient Rome, for example, centurions used piercings through their nipples to hold their capes in place. In our modern world, piercings -- from ears to tongues to belly buttons and even genital areas -- are increasingly popular, especially among young people.
But the recent death of a 17-year-old Newfoundland girl from toxic shock syndrome after having her breast pierced is a grim reminder that the complications of piercings are not widely known. And many provinces do not have guidelines or regulations to control how and where piercing
