Diovan Useful for Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention

Diovan (valsartan), a drug commonly used to treat high blood pressure, has been found to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke according to Novartis, who makes the drug. Studies show that it lowers blood levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), an inflammatory product that is strongly associated with cardiovascular risk. 
 
Cholesterol drugs, or statins, also have that effect but adding Diovan lowered the blood level of hsCRP even more, researchers found.

ZURICH (MarketWatch) -- Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG (NVS) Friday said its best-selling blood pressure medicine Diovan also helps to lower levels of a marker of inflammation, which is considered to be a risk factor for heart attacks and stroke.
 
Basel, Switzerland-based Novartis said that in a study involving 1,668 patients, Diovan was found to lower the level of an inflammatory marker called high sensitivity C-reactive protein, or hsCRP, independently of the drug's established ability to lower blood pressure.
