Lung Cancer Treatment, Avastin, May Come To US

Genentech has created a lung cancer medication that is used in over 70 countries other than the United States. The drug company, Roche, has filed with the FDA for rights to distribute Avastin in the United States as a treatment for lung cancer.

Avastin, the most promising new cancer drug of the past 10 years, on Wednesday passed another milestone with a request in the US for regulatory approval for advanced lung cancer.
 
The product, an injectable drug discovered by Genentech and marketed by Roche, has gone on sale in 77 countries in its initial indication for advanced colorectal cancer. A request for regulatory approval for a third indication, advanced breast cancer, is expected shortly, confirming Avastin's unusual potential as a treatment for varying forms of solid tumours, compared with the more focused nature of most cancer drugs targeted at single forms
