Welding Fumes Trial Begins in Ohio

Nearly 4000 other litigants are watching the progress of a Texas man's trial claiming damages against companies in the welding industry.  
 
Ernesto G. Solis claims that manganese fumes he inhaled in the course of welding work have caused brain damage and a hand tremor. Manganese has been suspected of causing Parkinson's Disease. 
 
Plaintiffs claim the industry did not warn them of the risk, and should be liable for damages. Industry officials deny the risk.


Trial of Texas welder's lawsuit opens, could set precedent

CLEVELAND - The welding industry can't be blamed for the brain damage a Texas man claims his job caused him, a lawyer for makers of welding rods said Monday in opening arguments of the first of about 3,800 such cases from around the country.
 
Ernesto G. Solis lacked sufficient warnings about the potentially poisonous fumes, his lawyer said, echoing a claim made in most of the other cases, which were consolidated into federal court here in 2003
