South Asians at Higher Risk for Diabetes, Kidney Failure

At a glance:

Immigrants to western countries from South Asian areas such as India have a higher risk of developing diabetes and its complications for genetic reasons. Doctors in Britain are making outreach attempts to these communities in order to educate them about the risks and ways to prevent diabetes. 
 
South Asians are 3-5 times likelier to develop diabetes, and once they have it, ten times more likely to develop kidney failure than white citizens. 
 
High blood pressure is also a risk factor for this population.

After partition in India, those South Asians who emigrated to the UK must have thought that their health problems would be over. Britain was considered a land of milk and honey, as well as fish and chips, where famine was non-existent and the climate was merciful.
 
However Asians are genetically programmed to survive the harsh environment of India, while the very characteristics that helped their races to flourish there have proved disadvantageous in the UK.
