Marijuana Does Not Cause Cancer: Study

At a glance:

Good news for some: a large study in Los Angeles finds no connection between marijuana use and cancers of the head, neck and lungs, 
 
even for heavy marijuana smokers. 
 
The finding was surprising since marijuana smoke is known to contain carcinogens; doctors surmise that perhaps the presence of THC has a protective effect against cell damage. 
 
The study was funded by the NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.
 
The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years
