Lawsuits Against Novartis Over Biphosphonate Drugs

At a glance:

More than 60 pending lawsuits against drugmaker Novartis have been moved to a US District Court in Tennessee. The suits claim that the drugs Aredia and Zometa, both made by Novartis, caused them to suffer "jaw death" or osteonecrosis of the jaw. The plaintiffs claim that Novartis did not sufficiently warn doctors about this possibility.

The entire class of drugs known as biphosphonates have been implicated in this condition, which causes extreme pain and disability as the jawbone erodes, usually as a consequence of dental surgery on patients taking this class of drugs which also includes Fosamax.
