Diabetes Cure Studied in Drug Cocktail

Researchers in California are studying a new drug combination that they hope will lead to a cure for juvenile diabetes. 
 
Animal tests have so far proven promising for the mixture of a monoclonal antibody and a peptide, designed to decrease the immune system's destruction of insulin-producing cells and at the same time protect the cells in a vaccine-like manner. 
 
The combination would be given orally and by nasal spray, eliminating the need for daily injections.  
 
It is hoped that the new treatment whould also prevent the long term damage to the eyes, heart, and kidney that diabetes produces.

DOCTORS have developed a cocktail of two drugs which can reverse diabetes.
 
Scientists described the discovery yesterday as “an important step towards a potential cure.” It could mean an end to the daily insulin injections and rigid dietary restrictions suffered by millions worldwide
