Medical Journal Retracts Chromium Study from 1997

At a glance:

Almost ten years after the fact, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine is retracting a study that denied a link between hexavalent chromium and cancer. The Journal claims it did not know at the time that the article was actually submitted by a consulting firm with ties to PG&E Corp, later found to be polluting the area surrounding their factory with chromium.

This case was widely publicized in the 1990s and eventually became the basis for the movie "Erin Brockovich".

PG&E claims the discosure should have been made but stands by the findings; others claim translation difficulties from the Chinese scientists whose data was studied and that the data was re-analyzed after it initially did show a link between chromium and cancer.
