Radiation Following Surgery Should be Considered in Lung Cancer

Patients with lung cancer who have surgery may benefit from radiation therapy after their operations, according to new research.  
 
In one study, five year survival was 7% higher in patients given radiation after surgery, than in patients who only had surgery. 
 
Currently, surgery is generally followed by chemotherapy. Radiation had been used in the past but found to be ineffective; researchers think that advances in radiation technology merit reconsideration of this option.

WEDNESDAY, June 14 (HealthDay News) -- Radiation therapy after surgery may need to be reconsidered as a treatment option for certain types of lung cancer, a new study suggests.
 
Following surgery with radiation therapy may prolong survival rates, concludes a study that analyzed data on 7,000 lung cancer patients from the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Database (SEER)
