Stem Cell Research Regrows Nerves in Rats

At a glance:

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have used stem cells to regrow damaged nerves and have enabled partially paralyzed rats to regain movement. 
 
While application in humans is still years away, it is an encouraging step forward towards helping those paralyzed because of trauma or disease.


Study Shows Promising Stem Cell Treatment for Paralysis

Scientists have made an exciting new step in stem-cell research that promises to one day help repair damage from nerve-destroying illnesses.
 
They have used stem cells and a combination of nerve-friendly chemicals to not only bridge damaged spinal nerves, as previous research did, but actually re-grow the circuitry needed to move a muscle. It has succeeded in helping partially-paralyzed rats to be able to walk again.
