Increased Risk of Stroke Associated with Failure to Take Meds

Canadian health officials warn that high blood pressure is on the increase, and part of the reason is that people are not faithfully taking their medications, with many stopping the drugs in the first year. This puts them at risk for many health problems such as stroke and heart and kidney disease. 
 
Doctors are urged to simplify the procedure by using long-acting drugs where possible, and educating their patients to associate taking the medication with other daily activities such as brushing their teeth, and to involve them in self-monitoring. 
 
Other lifestyle changes such as healthy diet, and exercise of course remain important in the prevention of heart disease and stroke.

TORONTO, May 10 /CNW/ - The release of the 2006 recommendations for the
 
management of hypertension (high blood pressure) comes with a warning that
 
unless patients and health care providers begin to work together more
 
effectively, the impact of high blood pressure on the health of Canadians
 
could be devastating.
 
The problem, warns the Heart and Stroke Foundation, is two-fold: an
 
increase in the number of patients with elevated blood pressure and for many,
 
poor blood pressure management
