New Lung Cancer Drug Given Orphan Drug Status

At a glance:

A new drug being studied for cancer treatment has been given "orphan drug" status in order to promote its development.  
 
The drug, picoplatin, is intended for the treatment of small cell lung cancer, in patients who have formed a resistance to platinum. 
 
Platinum therapy for cancer works by disrupting the tumor's DNA, but may be toxic and prone to development of resistance.  
 
Picoplatin is now in clinical trials in the US and Canada.

Orphan-drug designation has just been granted for the platinum compound drug picoplatin.
 
The drug produced by Poniard Pharmaceuticals, formally NeoRx, has received orphan-drug status for the treatment of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), according to CancerConsultants.com
