Heart Valve Damage Found in Parkinson's Patients Taking Permax

A new study suggests that a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease may cause heart valve trouble. 
 
Pergolide (Permax) is a dopamine agonist which helps symptoms in Parkinson's Disease but seems to be associated with leaky heart valves after long term use. In a new study, the risk of valve problems was three times higher in patients on the drug than in patients with similar health problems who did not take pergolide. 
 
The researchers recommend considering using other drugs for Parkinson's for heart disease patients.

ISLAMABAD: Heart valve disease appears to be relatively common in Parkinson’s disease patients treated with pergolide (Permax), according to results of a new study. Evidence suggests that the degree of damage correlates with lifetime dose of the drug, but the effects may be reversible.
 
Pergolide belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine agonists. It is derived from ergot, a substance obtained from plants, and works by acting in place of dopamine, a natural substance in the brain needed to control movement.
