New Diabetes Drugs on the Horizon

A new class of drugs for type II diabetes is under development by Merck and Novartis. 
 
The drugs, known as DPP-4 inhibitors, are meant to stimulate certain hormones that control glucose metabolism. 
 
Both Merck's Januvia and Novartis' Galvus worked well in clinical trials and had fewer side effects than current diabetes medications. 
 
Both drugs are awaiting FDA approval in the US.

Merck & Co. and Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG are aiming to be first to market with a new class of diabetes drugs designed to use the body's own mechanisms to control blood sugar.
 
The experimental pills, Merck's Januvia and Novartis's Galvus, may offer patients with the most common type of diabetes a new way to keep their disease in check, with fewer side effects than some older medicines, new studies show. The companies are highlighting data on their drugs today at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in Washington
