New Technology for Identifying Diabetics

Shining a fluorescent light on the skin may soon replace fasting blood sugar levels as a diagnostic test for diabetes. 
 
In tests, the VeraLight Scout's identification of "advanced glycation endproducts" (AGEs) in the skin was actually more accurate at identifying diabetics and pre-diabetics than the traditional blood test. 
 
AGEs affect proteins in blood vessels and skin and may be related to the aging process.

WASHINGTON, DC -- June 21, 2006 -- Researchers reported a new non-invasive technology that uses fluorescent light to detect the presence of abnormal concentrations of diabetes-related biological markers found in skin was able to significantly outperform fasting plasma glucose (FPG) as a screening test for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
 
Results from a clinical study presented at the 66th annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association, held here, showed a prototype medical device using the technology was able to identify 20% more patients with type 2 diabetes or its precursor
