Heart Failure Risk Doubles with Metabolic Syndrome

A study in Sweden finds that people with "metabolic syndrome" have almost double the risk of heart failure by age 70 compared to those without it, leaving aside all other risk factors. 
 
Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors that occur together, including obesity, high blood pressure, high blood fat levels, low "good" cholesterol levels, and high fasting blood sugar. At least three of the factors must occur. At least three of these factors must be present to make the diagnosis. 
 
Doctors think that the group of risk factors leads to damage not only of blood vessels, but the heart itself.

May 22, 2006 -- People who have a cluster of common medical conditions may be nearly twice as likely to develop heart failure by middle age.
 
A new study followed more than 2,300 Swedish men for more than 20 years and found those who had the cluster of common health risk factors, known collectively as metabolic syndrome, were almost twice as likely to develop heart failure by age 70 as those without it
