At a glance:

Studies indicate that environmental exposure to minerals can cause the lethal lung cancer known as mesothelioma.
 
It has previously been established that occupational exposure of asbestos leads to this, and other cancers but now scientists have found that people living near an asbestos source are also vulnerable.
 
A volcanic rock known as erionite has also been shown to be associated with mesothelioma, in studies in Turkey where this rock is abundant.

The researchers from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, followed 891 people age 20 years and older in three Turkish villages for 23 years. Two of the villages were exposed to erionite and one (the control) was not.
 
During this period, 372 deaths occurred, and 119 of these deaths occurred from mesothelioma. That figure represented 44.5% of all deaths in the two villages with erionite exposure.
