New Asbestos Laws Expected in Scotland

At a glance:

Scotland is planning to introduce a law next fall that will change the way asbestos victims there are compensated. 
 
Currently, mesothelioma sufferers must choose between immediate compensation, or have a larger payout go to their families after their death. 
 
The new bill proposes that the maximum payout be available to the victim while he is still alive. 
 
Scotland is also expected to request that it be added to the English bill that removes some obstacles from claimants who had more than one employer.

The executive is using the space provided by the moves to introduce a Damages Bill in autumn, which will alter the law on compensation for victims of mesothelioma, a form of asbestosis. At present, sufferers – who have an average 18 months to live after contracting the long-dormant and fatal disease have to choose between compensation from employers while they are alive, or a bigger pay-out for their families after they die from the condition
