Welder Loses Manganese Damage Case

The first in a series of trials claiming damages from manganese in welding rods has ended with a verdict of not liable. 
 
Ernesto G. Solis claimed that his tremor was due to manganese he was exposed to in the course of his work as a welder at a Navy base. 
 
He asserted that the welding rod manufacturer did not provide adequate warnings for use of the product. Manganese is suspected of causing neurological symptoms similar to Parkinson's Disease. 
 
The jury agreed with the defense, which said that there were adequate warnings and that Mr. Solis' health problems were not attributable to manganese.

CLEVELAND -- A jury on Tuesday found makers of welding rods were not liable for the health problems of a former civilian worker at a Navy base in a ruling that could influence thousands of similar claims, some headed to trial in coming months.
 
Ernesto G. Solis, 57, claims years of exposure to welding fumes at his job at a Navy base in Corpus Christi, Texas, damaged his health because of exposure to manganese within welding rods. Scientific research has been at odds over whether such exposure can lead to neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, which diminishes movement and speech
