Heart Patients Must Inform Dentists Before Treatment

If you have any kind of heart problem it is extremely important to inform your dentist before any type of dental procedure - even routine cleaning, as bacteria may be released into the bloodstream and damage hearts that are already weakened. 
 
The condition, known as subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE) is serious and may be fatal, but is preventable if antibiotics are given before the dental procedure. 
 
The same is true for children with Downs Syndrome, who often have abnormalities in their hearts.

Dental patients with certain heart abnormalities must receive the protection of an antibiotic regimen before any type of dental treatment is provided. This includes simple procedures like cleaning and polishing the teeth because even cleaning can cause bacteria to be released into the bloodstream through the gums.
 
In patients that have heart defects, these bacteria can settle in the heart and cause an infection called sub acute bacterial endocarditis, also known as SBE. This is a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition. However, patients with heart conditions can be treated safely if properly pre-medicated with antibiotics
