High Blood Homocysteine Levels Raise Risk of Heart Attack

Doctors in India are concerned about a risk factor for heart attacks that seems to be specific to their population. Possibly for genetic reasons, and probably for nutritional ones, many in India have elevated blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with increased risk of heart attack. 
 
A diet deficient in folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 contributes to the problem; conversely, vitamin supplements may lower the risk, say doctors. 
 
A recent meeting to study the problem called for long-term analysis of the effect of vitamin supplements and better testing facilities for the population.


Homocysteine: A 'bloody' cause of heart attacks

"Elevated levels of homocysteine are posing a problem in India, partly due to our genetic make-up and partly due to nutritional deficiencies," said JJ Hospital's emeritus professor of medicine G S Sainani.
 
A deficiency of folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12 contributes to hyperhomocysteinemia or increase in homocysteine levels, which in turn increases the risk of heart attacks, he added.
