Avastin Found Ineffective for Pancreatic Cancer

Drugmaker Genentech has stopped an experimental trial of the cancer drug Avastin for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. 
 
An independent monitoring board confirmed that the results were not going to meet the goals. 
 
Avastin is approved for treatment of several cancers including colorectal cancer, certain lung cancers and breast cancer. 
 
While Avastin appeared safe, it did not appear to aid in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. 
 
It is still being tested for other types of cancer.

(RTTNews) - Tuesday, Biotech drug maker, Genentech, Inc. announced that it had stopped the Phase III pancreatic cancer clinical trial after deciding its cancer drug, Avastin, did not meet its primary endpoint of overall survival. The company stopped the trial at the recommendation of an independent data monitoring board that decided that a significant improvement would be unlikely given the data already collected. Genentech said the trial was not stopped for safety reasons. In the first quarter, U.S. sales of Avastin jumped 96% to $398 million from $203 million in the year-ago quarter.
