Shingles Vaccine Approved

At a glance:

The FDA has approved Merck's new vaccine against Shingles (herpes zoster) for patients who have already had chicken pox and are over 60 years old. 
 
Shingles occurs when the chicken pox virus reactivates in the body after years of dormancy, and causes a distinctive rash and neurological symptoms including chronic debilitating pain. 
 
The vaccine, Zostavax, cuts the incidence of Shingles in half, and reduces symptoms in those who do get it by two-thirds.

WASHINGTON — Drug maker Merck won federal approval Friday to market the first shingles vaccine to people 60 and older, a potential market of millions as baby boomers age.
 
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it had cleared the way for Merck to begin shipping the vaccine, Zostavax. The vaccine is only for adults who have had chickenpox
