Evista Associated with Stroke Risk

At a glance:

A new concern has surfaced for the osteoporosis medication Raloxifene (Evista). 
 
Post menopausal women with known heart disease or at high risk for heart disease were studied and those taking Evista had a higher risk for death from stroke than those on a placebo. 
 
Evista may still be indicated for women who do not have heart disease, but this result should be taken into account when balancing the risks and rewards of this medication.

Health Canada has informed Health Care Professionals of important new safety information regarding Evista ( Raloxifene ) resulting from the Raloxifene Use for The Heart ( RUTH ) trial.
 
The RUTH trial, a large-scale placebo-controlled study, investigated whether a 60 mg daily dose of Raloxifene would reduce the risk of coronary events and the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women with known heart disease or at high risk for a coronary event.
