New Cancer Drug Targets Only Tumor, Not Normal Tissue

A preliminary clinical trial of a new cancer drug has shown encouraging results. The drug is "monoclonal antibody 806" which is designed to target and attack tumor cells but not normal cells. In the first trials it seems to have done just that, for cancers of several types including mesothelioma, other lung cancers, colorectal cancer and skin cancer. 
 
A drug such as this would have minimal side effects compared to other drugs of its type which do affect normal tissue.

New York, NY, USA | Jun 05, 2006 | The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR) and Life Science Pharmaceuticals (LSP) today announced the results of the first clinical trial of monoclonal antibody (mAb) 806, which demonstrate that 806 specifically targets epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on a wide range of tumor types but has no uptake by normal tissues. This result is markedly different to other mAbs, which target wild-type (wt) EGFR on normal tissues
