There is a vaccine in development for type I (juvenile) diabetes. It has proven successful in stopping the progression of the disease in lab animals, and is now in clinical trials. 
 
It works by stopping the autoimmune response with a particular protein called HSP60. 
 
Recent research has revealed how the vaccine works on a molecular level, and it is expected that this will enhance further development of the vaccine.

REHOVOT, Israel, June 19 (UPI) -- A team of Israeli researchers has discovered the molecular mechanism of a vaccine for Type 1 diabetes.
 
The team's leader, Professor Irun Cohen of the Weizmann Institute of Science, says the study should help amplify the effectiveness of the vaccine, which is in advanced stages of clinical trials
