Diabetes, Alzheimer's Link to be Studied

The evidence for a link between diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease is strong; a 2004 study showed that diabetics have more than double the risk of developing Alzheimer's than non-diabetics. 
 
Recently, 16 researchers in the U.S. were granted funding to study the relationship between the symptoms of Alzheimer's and the observed changes in the brain, and the role of glucose metabolism in the process.

Searching for the links between Alzheimer's and diabetes is important for Dr. Betty Tuller. A Florida Atlantic University (FAU) professor of complex systems and brain sciences and professor of psychology and biomedical sciences, Tuller was recently named only one of 16 persons nationwide to receive a $95,000 grant from the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health designated Florida's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (FADRC).
 
The grant will fund a yearlong study to explore the relationship between cognitive skills and brain deterioration caused by Alzheimer's - and what link or role diabetes plays in that process
