Poisonous Drug Leads to Deaths, Kidney Failure in China

At a glance:

Five people have died in China, and others are in critical condition, as a result of kidney failure brought on by a defective batch of the drug Armillarisin A, which is injected into patients with certain liver or gastric disorders. 
 
The problem has been traced to a substitution in ingredients, with diethylene glycol (a poison) being sold to the drug company as propylene glycol (the correct ingredient). The company apparently did not perform quality control checks, and the source of the chemical is under investigation.


Death toll from fake drug rises to 5

THE death toll has reached 5 after one more patient in Guangdong Province has died from using a drug produced by the Qiqihar No. 2 Pharmaceutical Co, CCTV reported today.
 
The Ministry of Health has ordered people to stop taking any drugs related to the Qiqihar drugmaker and the Taixing Chemical Company in Taixing, Jiangsu Province
