Asbestos Regulations Reminder

At a glance:

Officials in the San Diego area are reminding the public about strict laws concerning remodelling of homes built before 1980. 
 
Those houses or apartments MUST be tested for asbestos by the building contractor. Failure to do so results in heavy fines for the company and significant danger to the health of the residents. 
 
Asbestos was widely used in construction until its cancer-causing properties became known. Existing asbestos is only dangerous if disturbed, as in renovation, which causes it to become airborne and possibly inhaled, eventually causing cancer.


County officials are publicizing the health dangers of asbestos

A lot of people believe, mistakenly, that asbestos has been outlawed. But it hasn't, and it's still in many buildings.
 
County officials kicked off an asbestos awareness campaign yesterday, because of a rise in violations occurring during the recent spate of condo conversions.
