Women with Certain Gene Mutations Should Avoid Chest X-Rays

At a glance:

Women with certain gene mutations that are linked to breast cancer are at higher risk of developing it if they have routine chest X-rays. 
 
This finding does not apply (so far) to mammogram X-rays, but general chest (heart and lung) views. 
 
For women in this group who had X-rays before age 20, their risk of developing breast cancer by age 40 had doubled. 
 
The gene mutations are known as BRCA1 and BRCA2.


Chest X-rays ‘could increase cancer risk for some’ women

Women with a genetic susceptibility to breast cancer could be at further risk if they undergo chest X-rays, re-searchers warned yesterday.
 
A study of 1600 women with defective genes linked to breast cancer, BRCA1 and BCRA2 mutations, found they were 54% more likely to suffer the disease if they had ever had a chest X-ray. For women given such X-rays before the age of 20, the risk of developing breast cancer before their 40th birthday more than doubled
