Cancer cases may be linked to exhaust, customs officers fear
WINDSOR, Ont (Canadian OH&S News) -- The union for Canadian customs officers has commissioned a study to determine if exposure to diesel exhaust is to blame for a cluster of breast cancer cases in a group of female border officers in Windsor, Ontario.
Marie-Claire Coupal, president of the Windsor branch of the Customs Excise Union (CEU), says over the last five years, six female border officers, ranging in age from late-20s to late-40s, have been diagnosed with breast cancer. All of them work at the Ambassador Bridge, which Coupal says is the busiest port of entry for diesel-powered transport truck traffic between the US and Canada, with about 9,500 trucks daily. A seventh worker who works two blocks away from the border crossing, at the University of Windsor, has also been diagnosed with breast cancer, she adds.
