Border Guards Call for Study on Diesel Fumes

At a glance:

Border guards at the Canada-US border between Windsor Ontario and Detroit are concerned about the effect of breathing diesel fumes. Seven cases of breast cancer in female guards have been found in the last five years, and many others have respiratory symptoms and lung damage evident on chest x-rays.

The guards' union has called for a study to determine if diesel exhaust is to blame for these cancers. The scientific evidence up to now is suggestive but subject to debate.

Cancer cases may be linked to exhaust, customs officers fear

WINDSOR, Ont (Canadian OH&S News) -- The union for Canadian customs officers has commissioned a study to determine if exposure to diesel exhaust is to blame for a cluster of breast cancer cases in a group of female border officers in Windsor, Ontario.

Marie-Claire Coupal, president of the Windsor branch of the Customs Excise Union (CEU), says over the last five years, six female border officers, ranging in age from late-20s to late-40s, have been diagnosed with breast cancer. All of them work at the Ambassador Bridge, which Coupal says is the busiest port of entry for diesel-powered transport truck traffic between the US and Canada, with about 9,500 trucks daily. A seventh worker who works two blocks away from the border crossing, at the University of Windsor, has also been diagnosed with breast cancer, she adds.
