Osteoporosis Drugs and Dental Work May Lead to Trouble

Patients and doctors need to be aware of the risks of biphosphonate drugs such as Fosamax. 
 
These drugs are widely prescribed for osteoporosis and some cancers because they slow down the process of bone cell removal and allow bone cells to last longer. However when the patient undergoes some dental procedures such as tooth extractions or other dental surgery, this can have the effect of allowing unhealthy bone to persist and cause "jawbone death" or osteonecrosis.  
 
This painful, debilitating condition has no cure. Patients are urged to keep their dentists informed about this and any other medication they are taking.
