Risk in Longer-Acting Bronchodilator Drugs for Asthma

A new study suggests that popular drugs used to treat asthma may be causing many deaths attributed to the disease. 
 
The drugs are salmeterol, found in Advair and Serevent inhalers, and formoterol (Foradil). Researchers advise that an effort should be made to avoid these, and to concentrate therapy on inhaled corticosteroids and other inflammation reducers, shorter-acting bronchodilators, cell stabilizers and even breathing exercises.

Asthma deaths have been rising for decades, although the drugs to treat it are more powerful than ever before. Researchers now blame some of the most popular asthma drugs for this increased mortality.
 
A new analysis published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (June 20, 2006) reports that "salmeterol may be responsible for approximately 4,000 of the 5,000 asthma-related deaths that occur in the United States each year.
