Arsenic in moms, lung disease in offspring
Researchers working in northern Chile discovered the chance of a child developing bronchiectasis, a rare and often fatal lung disease, is 46 times higher if the child`s mother drank arsenic-contaminated water while pregnant. In addition, adults exposed to arsenic in utero or as children were also six times more likely to die of lung cancer than Chileans unexposed to the element.
'This study is the first to provide evidence that early life exposures may result in effects manifesting themselves in adults,' said lead author Allan Smith, a professor of epidemiology at University of California Berkeley`s School of Public Health.
