Contrast Imaging Dye can Lead to Kidney Failure

Researchers continue to evaluate the effect of an antioxidant, acetylcysteine, in preventing kidney failure in patients who undergo diagnostic procedures involving injections of "contrast medium". 
 
This is a type of dye, injected into the bloodstream, that allows the inside of blood vessels to be seen on x-ray, and is a very useful diagnostic procedure. However in some cases it can lead to kidney failure and even death. 
 
A new study out of Italy suggests that acetylcysteine does have a protective effect; however doctors disagree on the interpretation of the results. Previous studies have not been conclusive.
