Tylenol and the Like are Dangerous for Hepatitis Patients

At a glance:

People who are coming down with viral hepatitis (A or B) might experience flu-like symptoms at first, and take medication containing acetaminophen, the active ingredient in pain killers such as Tylenol, and the pain killer and fever reducer in many cold and flu formulas such as Nyquil. 
 
However in cases of Hepatitis, acetaminophen can form toxic byproducts and lead to acute liver failure and death, even when the recommended dosage or less is taken. 
 
Researchers urge doctors and the general public to become aware of this hazard.

LOS ANGELES, C.A. -- May 23, 2006 -- Acetaminophen, an over-the-counter medication found in over 300 treatments for pain relief and for flu-like symptoms, might accelerate liver damage in patients with hepatitis A or B. Researchers reported these findings here at Digestive Diseases Week 2006 (DDW).
 
"After gathering and studying data from sites around the country, it appears that acetaminophen, even when used at suggested therapeutic doses, can cause a second hit of viral hepatitis," noted Dr. Lee. "This helps us understand what might be behind the acute liver failure and death that we see sometimes in these patients.
