Recalled Firestone Tires Still Out There

At a glance:

A consumer advocate and families of crash victims have petitioned the NHTSA to investigate the effectiveness of the recall of Firestone ATX and Wilderness AT tires. Twenty million tires were recalled in 2000 and 2001 due to a defect that led to "tread separation" and serious accidents.

Eight million of those recalled tires are still in circulation, according to Sean Kane, President of Safety Research and Strategies, and are still causing accidents. Many were missed because they were stored as spare tires, and those are even more dangerous now because the tire material can deteriorate faster over time.

I have read some articles about tire age and I am a little concerned. I bought a used truck last September and the mechanic put 2 new tires on the front that he had upstairs in his shop. They are 256/75 16 Wilderness AT tires and they look new yet they are discontinued. Now that I know how to check tire age I found that one of them has an age code 170. Meaning week 17 1990, making it 18 years old. The other has 498 meaning 49th week 1998, 10 years old. They look to be in very good condition but are they safe. Joe Bast
